Updated for Summer 2026. Registration is now open for all 13 weeks.
Your child is registered for summer camp and the first day is approaching. Now comes the practical question every parent faces: what do they actually need to bring? Whether your child is attending a day camp or spending the week at an overnight program, having the right gear makes a big difference in their comfort and enjoyment. Here is a practical summer camp packing checklist based on what we see work best at our obstacle course day camp in Stafford, VA.
The Essential Day Camp Packing List
For a full-day summer camp program, your child needs the basics covered: a refillable water bottle (this is number one, kids get dehydrated fast during active play), a packed lunch with snacks they can eat quickly, closed-toe athletic shoes with good grip (no sandals or slip-ons), comfortable athletic clothing they can move freely in, sunscreen applied before drop-off, and a small backpack to carry everything.
At Ninja Stafford Summer Camp, we emphasize the athletic shoes point because kids are climbing, jumping, and gripping with their feet all day. Shoes that slip off or lack traction create safety issues on the obstacle course.
What to Wear to an Active Summer Camp
This seems simple but it trips up a lot of families on day one. The ideal outfit for an active camp day is moisture-wicking athletic shorts or leggings (avoid jeans or anything restrictive), a breathable t-shirt or athletic top, athletic socks that cover the ankle (prevents blisters), and hair tied back securely if it is long enough to interfere with obstacles.
Skip anything with hanging strings, loose jewelry, or open-back shoes. These can catch on equipment during obstacle course training and create safety hazards. Our coaches will ask kids to remove any items that could get caught.
What NOT to Bring
This list is just as important as the packing list. Leave at home any electronics including phones, tablets, and gaming devices, valuables or expensive items, open-toed shoes or sandals, and clothing your child cannot afford to get dirty or sweaty. Most camp programs including ours have a no-devices policy during camp hours. Kids engage better, make more friends, and have more fun when screens are not competing for their attention.
Pro Tips from Experienced Camp Parents
After years of running summer camp, here is what we have learned from the parents who have the smoothest camp mornings. Label everything with your child’s name, especially the water bottle and lunchbox. Pack an extra set of clothes in their backpack in case they get wet or muddy. Apply sunscreen at home before drop-off since reapplication during the day is harder to guarantee. Send snacks that are easy to eat quickly since break times go fast. And talk to your child about the day’s theme so they arrive excited and ready to go.
For our camp specifically, you can find complete details about what to bring, drop-off and pick-up times, and daily themes on our FAQ page. Want to know more about what a typical day looks like? Read our guide to a day in the life at ninja summer camp.
